Performance Space 122's annual performance festival, Coil, returns for its twelfth edition with 13 individual events. The festival explores the constant vitality of live performance in New York City through contemporary artists from diverse genres, cultures and perspectives. Featuring work created locally, across the U.S., and around the world, Coil is known for its groundbreaking contemporary performance across interdisciplinary art, working with new technologies and forms. Through installations, live and virtual practices, PS122 is committed to redefining how, where, and when performance is experienced.
Today in 2008, Passing Strange closed at the Belasco Theatre, where it ran for 165 performances. Passing Strange is a rock musical about a young African American's artistic journey of self-discovery in Europe, drawing on heavy elements of existentialism, metafictional comedy, and the Kunstlerroman. The musical's lyrics and book are by Stew with music and orchestrations by Heidi Rodewald and Stew. It was created in collaboration with director Annie Dorsen. The musical was developed at the Sundance Institute Theatre Lab in 2004 and 2005, one of the only works there ever to be invited back for a second round of development. It had productions in Berkeley, California and Off-Broadway before opening on Broadway in 2008, garnering strong reviews and several awards. Spike Lee filmed the musical on Broadway as a documentary, premiering the film in 2009.
Iconic non-profit arts organization, Performance Space 122 (PS122) announces that Vallejo Gantner has decided to step down as Artistic Director. He will remain with the organization until a new director is in place. Performance Space 122's Board of Directors has launched a search for new leadership with the goal of filling the position by the end of 2016.

Art world provocateur Ann Liv Young catapults her radical version of Sophocles' Elektra to the stage in her first American commission since 2008. Young's Elektra is volatile, authentic, honest, compassionate, steadfast and tragic. Created in collaboration with Annie Dorsen, the epic evening begins with her potent and corporeal vision of Sophocles' story of a family steeped in murder, revenge, and deception - Young plays the title role with an intrepid cast of performers (including her 8-year-old daughter, Lovey), cycling through versions of the text splintered by pop songs and sequences of bold, jarring movement. A lush intermission features performances by a special musical guest from Norway, drowning the theater and inviting a visit to the lobby bar. The evening rages on with Young's critically acclaimed, rough and tumble Elektra Cabaret. Exploring the fine line between following the social flow and being a responsible and decisive agent, Elektra wants everyone to question, to pay attention, and to break free from the yoke of social norms and act as an engaged individual.
