Zimmerli To Close During Summer Of 2020 For Building Improvements

The Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers has announced a plan to close to the public starting May 18 through August 31, 2020, to carry out structural renovations to the front entrance and terrace, as well as corresponding internal spaces. Museum programming, including Summer Art Camp, will be relocated to partner locations throughout the summer, with details to be announced in the spring. In addition, PaparazZi Café will be closed during this time. The Zimmerli will welcome back visitors at the start of the new Rutgers semester on September 1, 2020, keeping doors open until 9 p.m. for its popular Art After Hours: First Tuesdays social event.

Theater for the New City Will Present Donald E. Lacy Jr. in COLORSTRUCK

From February 27 to March 15, Theater for the New City (TNC) will present comedian/actor/broadcaster Donald E. Lacy Jr. updating his one man show, 'ColorStruck,' a bittersweet examination of how cultural assumptions drive American society. Since national politics provide a never-ending supply of new material, the piece is continually reshaped. The velocity of change since TNC presented the show's New York debut last year (Feb-March, 2019) has inspired Lacy to initiate a new version that reflects pressing current events.

Queer|Art Awards Second Annual Eva Yaa Asantewaa Grant For Queer Women(+) Dance Artists

Queer|Art, New York City's home for the creative and professional development of LGBTQ+ artists, is pleased to announce the winner of the second annual Eva Yaa Asantewaa Grant For Queer Women(+) Dance Artists, Hollerin Space. Philadelphia-based duo Hollerin Space will receive a $10,000 cash grant to support the development of Hold On, a new work that researches algorithms of black assembly and theories and practices of being free. This particular work traces black gathering and migrations in the broad period between 1919 and into some optimistic future. Development of this work will include study and enactment of the Juneteenth tradition of call, drum & step as part of the group's training for the premiere of an ensemble production set for 2020 in Philadelphia. The ensemble will convene for 10 workshops over a 9 month period, centering research and world building, at House of Black Infinity located in Philadelphia.

Preeminent gospel artist Yolanda Adams, The New York Times' critic-at-large Wesley Morris, and singer Valerie June are confirmed as part of the LA Phil's Power to the People! festival. Adams will perform with the LA Phil, led by Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, as well as West Angeles Church of God in Christ Choir, at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Sunday, March 8, at 2pm. Morris, one of the most compelling cultural critics of our time, will speak at the California African American Museum, Tuesday, March 10, at 7pm. Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist June will perform along with Terence Blanchard and Ben Harper in an evening dedicated to the exploration of Spike Lee's movie music at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Saturday, March 14, at 8pm.
