The 42nd Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards were handed out in front of an enthusiastic audience tonight at The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre in the Elgin Theatre. Hosted by award-winning actor and director, Sabryn Rock, the gala ceremony celebrated excellence in Toronto theatre, dance and opera. The ceremony, which unfolded with characteristic razzle-dazzle, caps one of the most tumultuous periods in the history of Toronto performing arts.
At a press conference held at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) announced 235 nominations for the 42nd Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards, which recognize excellence in professional theatre, dance and opera in Toronto.
Opening March 2 for a limited run, Hart House Theatre presents a Shakespeare's revenge tragedy of epic proportions, Titus Andronicus. Directed by well-known indie Shakespeare buff, James Wallis, and starring a stellar cast of both professional and emergent talent, this production of Titus Andronicus promises to deliver a classic tale through the lens of fresh, youthful talent.
The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia (UBC) presents Noche Flamenca'sAntigona, their critically-acclaimed work fusing flamenco and Greek tragedy, March 12 at 7pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall. Adapted from Sophocles' Antigone, and starring Bessie-award winner Soledad Barrio as the lead, Antigona looks at repression, heroism and loss in a fiery, multi-media spectacle.
