The 2014 Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards ceremony took place at Paper Mill Playhouse on Tuesday, June 3rd at 7:30pm with an audience of over 1,200. Princeton Day School came out on top, winning Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical for their production of Urinetown. A total of 29 awards were presented along with five scholarships and other cash prizes.

Teaneck New Theatre (TNT)-in association­­ with The Hackensack Cultural Arts Center (HCAC)-will present the New Jersey premiere of Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson, a pop/rock musical with a new perspective on the seventh president of the United States. Music and lyrics are by Michael Friedman, with a book by Alex Timbers. Directed by Alex Perez (De La Guarda, Julian and Romero, Wanderlust) and Musical Direction by Charles Santoro (NYMF: Zapata! Outcast Theatre Company will present the world premiere of Joshua Robinson's play Valentine at the 133rd Street Arts Center, located at 308 West 133rd Street in New York City. The play is inspired by the real life murder of fifteen year-old Lawrence King, a Transgender student, at a middle school in Oxnard, CA in 2008. His murderer, Brandon McInerney, eventually pleaded out after his first hearings ended in mistrial. Allegations were confirmed that Lawrence had publicly expressed romantic interests in McInerney, culminating in an invitation for Brandon to be his Valentine. Brandon returned the next day and shot King twice in the head at point blank range. While the case never managed to break into a major nationwide media story, the implications of the murder, the involvement of both families, and the role of school administrators and educators in the case are issues that are pertinent to the current cultural conversation regarding the LGBTQ movement and public education. It is the hope of Outcast Theatre Company that this production of Valentine will enter into that dialogue.

The Center Players of Bayonne have assembled Tribe members that are gearing up and preparing a theatrical presentation of HAIR: The Rock Musical at the JCC of Bayonne. Lyrics are by James Rado & Gerome Ragni, Music by Galt MacDermot. The production is Directed and Choreographed by Alex Perez (De La Guarda, Ultimate Drag Off, Oz) and Musical Direction by Luisa Sauter. The performance will be presented in full including the wonderful hits of the 1960's rock era including 'Let the Sunshine In', 'Aquarius', 'Easy to be Hard', 'Donna' and the title song 'Hair'.

Argus Eyes Drama Society of Saint Peter's University will open their production of 'RENT' in April.

Students involved in High Tech High School's Musical Theatre Department recently had the great honor and pleasure of welcoming Rob McClure (recent star of Broadway's CHAPLIN and AVENUE Q) as he conducted a puppetry master class Monday, February 11th at the high school.
