BWW Review: You've Got Us Sold with BUYER and CELLAR at the Provincetown Theater
by Kristen Morale
- Aug 31, 2016
When a play like Buyer and Cellar is written, a show about aspiring actor Alex Moore who finds himself employed by Barbra Streisand to work in her basement mall, you actually become grateful that someone not only thought of such an amusing idea, but also managed to almost effortlessly turn it into some sort of ingenious production. When you see a single actor take the audience so willingly through the ins and outs of the most interesting job anyone will ever have, you have a feeling the show will be great. You have this sort of "how come I didn't think of that" moment, followed by moments of wondering how such an idea can possibly make its way to the stage. Give up thinking about it because you're not going to actually see the brilliance of Buyer and Cellar until you see it brought to life by the Peregrine Theatre Ensemble.

Hennepin Theatre Trust presents BUYER & CELLAR, the outrageous comedy about the price of fame, the cost of things and the oddest of odd jobs at the New Century Theatre (615 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis) March 31-April 24, 2016. The New York Post praised the show as "fantastically funny" when it premiered off-Broadway in April 2013. The Minneapolis production stars local actor Sasha Andreev as "Alex Moore" and is directed by critically acclaimed Wendy Knox.
BWW Review: Let the BUYER & CELLAR Beware
by Larry O'Brien
- Oct 16, 2015
Jonathan Tolins' BUYER AND CELLAR is being performed at Downstage, which is appropriately a cellar, at 2d Story Theater in Warren, RI. I have to admit I have been putting off writing this review. In this eighty-minute one-man show directed by the estimable Lara Hakeem and featuring the multi-talented Kevin Broccoli as Alex Moore, a struggling actor recently fired from Disneyland for failing to stay in character, takes a job working in an underground mall beneath the home of Barbra Streisand. Did I say he plays a struggling actor? That is only partially correct: moving effortlessly from persona to persona, Broccoli also becomes Alex's lover, Streisand's secretary, James Brolin and Streisand herself. BUYER AND CELLAR really seemed to be hitting its stride when Alex and Streisand (Broccoli v. Broccoli) meet in one of the shops in the subterranean private mall and conduct a lengthy negotiation of the absurd, haggling over the price of a doll she already owns. At this point, BUYER AND CELLAR is laugh out loud funny. Would that it had stayed that way.

BWW Review: Audiences Will Love BUYER AND CELLAR at the Panasonic Theatre
by Alan Henry
- Nov 15, 2014
Sometimes an idea is so crazy, it just might work. The premise behind the hit Off-Broadway play, Buyer and Cellar is simple – Barbra Streisand has an underground mall in her basement and hires an out of work actor to tend to the shops. The first part of the premise is based in reality; Streisand really does have an underground mall – which she discusses in her book My Passion for Design. The out of work actor working there is the brainchild of playwright Jonathan Tolins.
