Berklee College of Music has named film composer and orchestrator Sean McMahon as chair of the Film Scoring Department. McMahon is a Berklee alumnus who has scored the films The Grudge III, 400 Days, and The Great White Storm, and has composed additional music for Dreamworks and Sony/Columbia pictures. McMahon has served as assistant chair of the department since 2017. He will succeed Alison Plante as chair on September 1, 2019. In his new role, McMahon looks to build on the 40-year legacy of film scoring at Berklee.
Academy Award, Golden Globe and Grammy winning composer Gabriel Yared is going to be Tom Needham's exclusive guest this Thursday at 6 pm on WUSB's THE SOUNDS OF FILM. Gabriel is most well-known for his scores for 'The English Patient,' 'Cold Mountain,' 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' and 'The Lives of Others.' Later this year, Gabriel Yared is going to be receiving the distinguished Max Steiner Award in the City of Music, Vienna.

The highest honors of the evening went to film composer and multiple award-winning jazz musician Terence Blanchard, who was named a BMI Icon in recognition of his significant contributions to the cinematic community, and William Ross, who received BMI's Classic Contribution Award for his outstanding work as an arranger, orchestrator, conductor, music director, composer and mentor to emerging talent. WaterTower Music announced today the details of the soundtrack to Ready Player One, Steven Spielberg's action adventure based on Ernest Cline's best-selling book of the same name. The film is in theaters March 29, and the soundtrack, featuring the score by award-winning composer Alan Silvestri (The Avengers, the Back to the Future Trilogy, Forrest Gump), becomes available for streaming and digital purchase the next day. A two-CD version of the soundtrack is slated for an April 6 release, with a Double Vinyl configuration of the soundtrack available July 13.
