Broadway Match Maker, a bone marrow donor database drive, will be held today, June 27th from 4:30-7:00pm at The Actors Fund Friedman Health Center for the Performing Arts (729 7th Avenue, 12th Floor). All members of Broadway's diverse community are encouraged to join the donor database through a non-invasive 60-second simple cheek swab. Disney's The Lion King is partnering with Shannon's S.H.A.R.E. Foundation, The Actors Fund, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and Mount Sinai Doctors for the event.

Just last night, May 12, Tiffany Schleigh presented Cabaret for a Cause, a one-night-only event to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The speial event was held at Galapagos Art Space and was dedicated to Shannon Tavarez (The Lion King) (January 20, 1999-November 1, 2010). Last year, thousands of people were touched by the story of eleven-year-old Shannon Tavarez. The young Queens native was living her dream, performing the role of Young Nala in Broadway's The Lion King, when she was diagnosed with leukemia in April 2010 and told she needed a bone marrow transplant. While Shannon's story moved thousands of people to register as bone marrow donors, her match was never found. Sadly on November 1, 2010 Shannon passed away.

Shannon's strength and her happy, positive spirit will live on in our hearts and minds each day. Shannon's dream was to perform on stage, and that she did. We are grateful for the ongoing support from her Lion King family and the Broadway community...

It's moving and inspirational in every sense of the word.

The Lion King and Broadway Community will host a benefit concert for Shannon Tavarez on Monday, September 27 at 9:30 PM at the Metropolitan Room (34 West 22nd St.)

Shannon Tavarez, the 11-year-old former star of Disney's Lion King, got 50 Cent's attention when she was diagnosed with leukemia. A distant cousin of the rapper, 50 Cent did everything he could to help the former Broadway star and has since made it his mission to help leukemia patients nationwide find a bone marrow match.

Ryan Flynn and Maria Theo will host Emma Hunton, Tim Young and more during 'Songs for a Cure,' a night of song to benefit DKMS and former Lion King cast member battling AML leukemia, Shannon Tavarez, August 16th at the Laurie Beechman Theatre.
