Lovely Hoffman BIO

Born in neighborhood of Roxbury, MA, Lovely was raised in the church where both of her parents were ministers. It was here that she was first introduced to singing and performing. Lovely says, "When I was young, adults would tell me that God gave me a voice that I needed to share with the world, so I want to use my gift to touch and inspire people, especially for social change. That's the impact I want to make with my music.”
Growing up, music was an important part of Lovely’s identity. She used every opportunity to showcase her talent. She performed at school, at church and at local talent shows. But a defining moment for Lovely was when she performed at the world-renowned Fenway Park and sang “The National Anthem” in front of over 20,000 people. Lovely recounts, “It was at this moment that I knew music had my heart and I wanted to live music forever.”

When Lovely attended Boston College she made sure to minor in music, her first love. She also began to perform on shows with Grammy Award winning artists Ne-Yo and T-Pain. Additionally, Lovely shared the stage with Atlantic Records platinum selling star Jaheim and Motown legend Dennis Edwards of the Temptations.

In the wake of the death of Michael Brown and Eric Garner in 2014, Lovely felt compelled to write a song and direct a music video entitled, Black Lives Matter, to stand in solidarity with families who were victims of injustice. Upon releasing this song Lovely stated, “for me art must reflect the feelings and experiences of the people and the time.” In May 2015, her “Black Lives Matter” music video won First Place at the San Francisco Black Film Festival. This video was also an opening night Film at the Chicago International Social Change Film Festival and was an Official Selection of the Roxbury International Film Festival and the Reel Sisters of the African Diaspora Film Festival in Harlem, New York.

Lovely’s passion for the music extends beyond singing and writing. Lovely has also branched out to musical theatre and has received positive acclaim. In 2015, Lovely Hoffman won the Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Celie in the New England premier of “The Color Purple.” Additionally, Lovely Hoffman has received rave reviews from theatre critics for her performance in Doubt: A Parable, Kiss Me, Kate, Hairspray, Ain't Misbehavin', Little Shop of Horrors, Avenue Q, Hair and Ragtime.

Lovely’s mantra, “Creativity takes Courage,” inspires her to write music and embrace art that encompasses the wide spectrum of the human experience. From love, to pain, to hope and justice, people are captivated by Lovely because they connect her musical stories, which not only inspire, but also empower and heal. And for Lovely that is the job of an artist.

BWW Review: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS: This Plant's No Shrinking Violet

Rachel Bertone has set the bar high for the 45th anniversary season of the Lyric Stage Company with her pitch perfect production of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. Assuming the mantle of both director and choreographer, with the dependable Dan Rodriguez as music director by her side, Bertone and her design team capture the grit and the innocence of the story set in the early 1960s, while finding ways to punctuate it with flashes of contemporary pizzazz. Puppet designer Cameron McEachern has crafted an Audrey II without gender bias on its menu, and despite being voiced by a woman (Yewande Odetoyinbo), the plant is no shrinking violet.
