New York Stage and Film announced UGBA as the 2023 recipient of the Founders’ Award and JaMeeka Holloway as the recipient of this year’s Pfaelzer Award. The Yale Indigenous Performing Arts Program (YIPAP) is currently accepting submissions for both the 8th Annual Young Native Playwrights Contest (Deadline: March 1), and the 3rd Annual Misty Upham Award for Young Native Actors (Deadline: Feb 28th). AlterTheater has named playwright Diana Burbano to the newly created position of Director of New Play Development. AlterTheater's first show with in-person audiences since the pandemic began moves Bay Area theater closer to accurate representation for Native American stories. Pure Native is the story of a Haudenosaunee community, written by Haudenosaunee playwright Vickie Ramirez, and stars two Haudenosaunee actors, with costumes by a noted Haudenosaunee fashion designer, Iakowi:he'ne' Oakes. 

This summer, AlterTheater reopens with in-person audiences. For the first time in its 17 year history, AlterTheater will perform outdoors, with a new play by Tuscarora writer Vickie Ramirez, Pure Native. 

  Seattle Rep today announced a second round of its large-scale playwright commission project, 20x30: Reimagining the Anthropocene, in which the organization has commissioned three playwrights in an effort to plants seeds for the future of the industry.

AlterTheater’s 2022/2023 season includes a mix of virtual, hybrid, and in-person programming, including both outdoor and indoor in-person performances. AlterTheater also continues to provide virtual performing arts workshops and an in-person sleepaway summer camp through its Arts Learning Project for Native Youth.
