The Mingus Dynasty Septet plays often at the Jazz Standard in New York City, one of the top jazz clubs in the country. La Jolla's Athenaeum Library brought them to San Diego for two performances that included a tribute to Charles Mingus's Tijuana Moods album, originally recorded in 1957 and finally released in 1962. The septet, appropriately enough, played first in Tijuana. The following night I was at the TSRI Auditorium near the UCSD campus to see a repeat performance of the all-Mingus program.

The 2017 edition of American Documentary Film Festival opens this Friday, March 31st, 9:30 am at Camelot Theatres with the Annual AmDocs Film Fund Pitch Competition (Presented by Synimatica). The Film Fund Pitch Competition is open to the public and is free. Following the competition, AmDocs will feature four film screenings throughout the day, including the timely THERE WILL BE WATER (11am) - a Danish film that documents the way in which saltwater can be brought to the desert, turned to freshwater, and used to fuel agriculture, industry and improve the lives of millions. It's a must see for anyone living in the Western United States.

The event, which runs through April 5th at the Camelot Theatres, will include more than fifty screenings of documentary films, plus film seminars and filmmaker Q&As. Festivities begin Thursday evening, March 29th, at 6pm with a special Opening Night Reception honoring legendary filmmaker Oliver Stone.
