South Pacific sails onto the Theatre Memphis Lohrey Stage June 2 - 25, 2017. This Pulitzer Prize-winning musical follows a nurse stationed on an island during World War II who is in love with a French expatriate plantation owner. She struggles accepting his mixed-raced children and, along with another romance between a U.S. Lieutenant and a young island native, issues of racial prejudice and gender roles are candidly explored. Filled with memorable songs such as "Some Enchanted Evening", "I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Outa My Hair" and "Bali Ha'i", to name a few.

LORD OF THE FLIES opened this past weekend at Playhouse on the Square, and runs through March 26.

Wendy, Michael, and John Darling are in for the adventure of their lives when Peter Pan comes swooping into their nursery one seemingly average night. Featuring songs such as "I Gotta Crow" and "I'm Flying," this timeless tale of fun, adventure, and of course, never growing up is the perfect holiday treat for audiences of all ages. 

MOONVINE opened this weekend at TheatreWorks. Directed by Ken Zimmerman, this play by Teri K. Feigelson won the 2014-15 NewWorks@TheWorks Playwriting competition. It plays Thur- Sat evenings, with Sunday matinees through July 31.

At one point in Diana Grisanti's sharply written RIVER CITY, in its final weekend at Voices of the South, an older character challenges the 'education' that a fourteen year-old black youth has received at St. Thomas, the Catholic-run orphanage in Louisville: The young man may know history from a white perspective, but does he know anything important about his own black heritage -- and does he know what's happening in 1968, as the black community plans a demonstration to protest the rehiring of a police officer guilty of harassment? (Yes, sadly, the times . . . they aren't always 'a-changin' -- sorry, Mr. Dylan.) I remember an instance when, as a white youngster in a rural town outside Memphis, I first heard the name 'Martin Luther King.' Our school bus had already run, and I was waiting for the bus of my best friend (who happened to be black) to drop him off so that he could rid himself of his books, change clothes, and come out to play. When he descended from the bus, I walked with him down the lane where he lived with his grandparents. I asked him what he had done in school that day, and he replied that he learned who the father of 'his' country was. 'George Washington,' I interrupted. 'No,' he insisted. 'The father of 'his' country was Martin Luther King.' In just a few years, some great strides would be made; however, I am nearing seventy now -- and the ugliness of racism is still omnipresent. Not only does police harassment still dominate the news, but, with the OSCARS being broadcast Sunday evening, there is a planned boycott by a number of black actors and actresses over the lack of racial diversity among the major nominees.

From what I've gathered, the original production of CARRIE THE MUSICAL would have been a dream project for Bialystock and Bloom, THE PRODUCERS: There's something eyebrow-raising about taking Stephen King's novel CARRIE and drenching it - not just in blood, but in music and lyrics. Evidently, Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford felt up to the task, and with a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, the musical version became a theatrical reality. However, it's a 'slippery slope' they tread: Do you play something like this 'straight' - or do you decide to go in the direction of 'camp'?

Director Dave Landis pulls no punches in this rigorous and elaborate show.
