After three years without its main fundraising event, the 59-year-old Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) has announced the return of its annual Gala, to be held at the world famous Plaza Hotel on Monday, May 1st, 2023 (6:30pm - 9:00pm).

The nationally recognized Harlem School of the Arts has announced the appointment of Steve Wilson to the position of Chief Operating Officer.

The 58-year-old Harlem School of the Arts has appointed James C. Horton as the organization's seventh President. Mr. Horton comes to HSA by way of the Museum of the City of New York, where he has served in the newly created position of Vice President of Education and Engagement, since February 2021.

Continuing with the celebration of the opening of Dr. Phillips Center’s Steinmetz Hall will be the professional world premiere of Duke Ellington’s BLACK, BROWN AND BEIGE, a piece that first played at Carnegie Hall in 1943 and was created to “provide a more accurate accounting of African American history written for the first time by a member of his race.” Critically panned simply because it was ahead of its time, Ellington never performed it in its entirety again. This version of the piece, which was commissioned by G. Schirmer, Inc. through Ellington’s son Mercer in 1987 is arranged and orchestrated by music scholar and former Ellington bandmate Randall Keith Horton. I caught up with Mr. Horton to learn more about this piece, why it is so important (and appropriate for the Steinmetz opening celebration) and what audiences can expect from this performance.

Northern Stage is pleased to announce its fifth annual New Works Now, a showcase and celebration of new plays to be presented January 19-21 at the Barrette Center for the Arts. Inaugurated in 2014, New Works Now presents rehearsed staged readings of plays new to the American theater. New Works Now 5.0 will include three staged readings, each featuring a post-show conversation with the playwrights, actors, and directors. A fourth off-site 10-minute play will be presented twice at two different area businesses during the festival weekend.
