Portland Stage Presents THE ROOMMATE

The Odd Couple meets Thelma and Louise in this contemporary, new play, which was a recent hit at both The Humana and Williamstown Theater Festivals. Sharon, divorced, and living in a house in Iowa, decides she needs a roommate. Robyn, a slam poet from the Bronx, is escaping her past and needs to start over. Despite their differences, Sharon begins to uncover Robyn's secrets and discovers her own desire to transform her life completely. Heartbreaking and blisteringly funny, The Roommate offers an exquisitely real portrait of human connection.

BWW Review: Genuine Voices and Situations in Portland Stage's STRING AROUND MY FINGER

Portland Stage's latest production is an engaging staging of Brenda Withers' new play, String Around My Finger, which had won the 2015 Clauder Competition and then been developed through the theatre's Little Festival of the Unexpected. The four-character play, set entirely in a hospital where a young couple finds themselves coping with the miscarriage of their child, resonates with a genuineness of dialogue, character and situation.
BWW Review: Chekhov on the Delaware: Perfectly Calibrated Durang Play Opens Good Theater's 15th Season

During the first act of Christopher Durang's Tony award-winning 2013 play, Vanya and Sonya and Masha and Spike, the characters muse that 'if everyone were on anti-depressants, there would be no Chekhov.' Happily for Portland theatre goers, it seems that none of the six colorful, endearing, eccentric personages in Durang's contemporary comedy appears to be on any medication. Rather they squabble and moan and rant about their lives in absurdly clever and humorous dialogue as they struggle to find some happiness in the human bonds which connect them.

BWW Reviews: Novelist Debuts as Playwright

Portland Stage closes its season with the world premiere of award-winning Maine novelist, Monica Wood's touching first play, Papermaker. Set during the papermill strike of 1989 in the fictional town of Abbott Falls, Maine, the work probes the perceptions, conflicts, and interactions of individuals on both sides of the painful controversy. Handling material already familiar to her readers from her memoir, When We Were the Kennedys, Wood brings to the stage a compassionate grasp of character, a poetic sense of metaphor, and just enough sharp wit and turn of phrase to add spice to this all-too-human drama about ordinary folks whose lives and identities are turned upside down by the bitter labor dispute.
