BIO

Katherine M. Carter directs theatre, opera, and events. She is the co-founding Artistic Director of The MITTEN Lab, a new theatre residency in Northern Michigan for emerging artists, and the founding Artistic Director of The Other Mirror, dedicated to adaptations for the stage whose work includes Gods & Kings, Mirror Alchemy, Going Away, Bite the Apple, and Madame Bovary. Katherine is a two-time director in the Directors Company Adaptations for the Stage Workshop, the 2011-2012 Playwrights Horizons Directing Resident, a Drama League Rough Draft Fellow, and a guest director at New York University’s Stella Adler and Atlantic Schools. Katherine has worked with The Little Orchestra Society, 54 Below, Flux Industries, Dixon Place, On Site Opera, and Boston Opera Collaborative. In 2014 Katherine was awarded Best Director of a musical for her direction of La Cenerentola in Boston, MA. She is a member of Directors Lab Chicago (’11, ’14), a New Georges Affiliated Artist, an associate member of SDC and the League of Professional Theatre Women.



Currently she is collaborating with playwright Monet Hurst-Mendoza on Blind Crest, which will be apart of the Magic Time Series at the Gym at Judson. Katherine was awarded a 2016 Drama League Residency with composer/lyricist team Neil Douglas Reilly and Maggie Herskowitz for their new musical The Great Big Blue.

Katherine is a 2016 Wolf Trap Opera Directing Fellow, where she will direct the Spotlight Scene Series and assist director Paul Curran on Opera at the Filene Center featuring the National Symphony Orchestra.

Directed by John Caird and, for this revival, Katherine M. Carter, the production featured a talented cast of emerging opera stars, Studio Artists (many of whom were in featured roles), additional chorus members and the Children’s Chorus of Washington. This large cast filled the stage with excitement, love, and ultimately profound grief.
