Review: THE FROZEN SECTION thaws at Catastrophic Theatre
by Brett Cullum - Apr 7, 2025

It has a stunning cast, technical brilliance, and enough great poetic ideas to keep you thinking about it for days. It’s an intriguing piece that should have a long life. But in its current iteration playing at the MATCH, THE FROZEN SECTION runs long at almost two hours with no intermission, and the pacing seems off throughout its inflated run time.

Review: SPIRITS TO ENFORCE from Catastrophic Theatre
by Brett Cullum - Sep 22, 2024

Are the superheroes really simply the spirits that Prospero conjured on the island? Could Fathom City have been taken over by Dr. Cannibal (an anagram for Caliban) because he fled and tossed his books into the sea? Is this a sequel, a salute, or a sardonic spoof of Shakespeare’s work?

BWW Review: Comedy Takes a Bittersweet Turn in Catastrophic's TRAGEDY: A TRAGEDY
by Suzanne Tidwell - Oct 17, 2019

It wasn't the comedy of broadcasters who have absolutely no information to share but share it anyway that stayed with me, nor was it watching each of these characters disintegrate into their lowest common denominators as they desperately cling to order. It was instead in their attempts, on the last night of the world, to stay connected. They hold on to their microphones (quite literally) and to each other and their unseen audiences to their last coherent moment, 'speaking to keep loneliness at bay'.

BWW Review: FIRST SUBURB at The Catastrophic Theatre is All That and a Bag of Chips
by Pnina Topham - Nov 20, 2018

The Catastrophic Theatre's production of FIRST SUBURB is utterly relatable and simply unshakable. From the open to the close, the show felt like a hug from an old friend. Set in the 90's, the show actively triggers your sense memory, and immerses audiences into the way-back-when. But like most memories of yore, things are seldom what they seem. FIRST SUBURB delivers an evening of levity and warmth. And on these cold winter nights, there is simply nothing better.

BWW Review: LEAP AND THE NET WILL APPEAR at Catastrophic Theatre
by Pnina Topham - Feb 16, 2018

LEAP AND THE NET WILL APPEAR is an evocative theatrical experience, rooted in the intertwined existence of farcical and absurd characters, each seeking love, respect and/or money, and the most potent human driver: acceptance.

BWW Review: SONG ABOUT HIMSELF Confounds at Catastrophic Theatre
by Brett Cullum - Nov 18, 2016

SONG ABOUT HIMSELF is a linguistic fantasia set inside of the chatroom of a post-apocalyptic social network. This is intellectual sci-fi drama played on a sparse set and focused on how we connect as humans and machines. There are ghosts here on both sides of humanity's line, and language suffers the most as a result.
