Through home movies, audio recordings, family photos, letters and interviews, Cecilia Aldarondo's MEMORIES OF A PENITENT HEART reconstructs her uncle Miguel's New York life, one he lived far from his family, especially his religious mother.

Applications are now being accepted for the Women In Film Foundation's 2013 Film Finishing Fund grants, it was announced today by FFF Committee Co-Chairs Betsy Pollock and Nancy Rae Stone.

The Herb Alpert Foundation and California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) will award the 18th Annual Alpert Award in the Arts to five exceptional mid-career artists. The award recognizes past performance and future promise to artists working in Dance, Film/Video, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts with a prize of $75,000. Herb Alpert, the legendary musician and artist who created the Herb Alpert Foundation with his wife Lani Hall and gave the first Alpert Award in the Arts in 1995 says, "The Alpert Awards are given to those who take aesthetic, intellectual and political risks, and challenge worn-out conventions. They're unafraid of the unknown."

Legendary actor and comedian Carl Ballantine died at his home in Los Angeles yesterday of natural causes at the age of 92. Billing himself as 'Ballantine the Great' or 'The Amazing Ballantine,' his vaudeville-style comedy routine involved transparent or incompetent stage magic tricks, which tend to flop to the wisecracking Ballantine's mock chagrin.
