Mission Society of New York City held its 96th annual Founding Families Gala on Monday, June 3rd, honoring scientist Philson Warner of Cornell University's Cooperative Extension and Grammy Nominee Alex Newell at a celebratory event that raised over half a million dollars to support programs that provide young people with a path towards economic opportunity.

This year's honorees are legendary actress and singer Diahann Carroll, entrepreneur Don Peebles, and three lifetime members of the Mission Society's Board of Directors: actress and philanthropist Dina Merrill Hartley, whose family has supported the Mission Society for four generations; Lloyd W. Brown, II; and, LTC Francis W. Kairson, Jr. (Ret).

On Tuesday, January 24, philanthropist Jean Shafiroff brought together several dozen supporters of the New York City Mission Society to begin planning for the annual Champions for Children Gala. Jean Shafiroff will again chair the benefit, which will be held on April 5 at the Mandarin Hotel.

On October 18th, Afro-Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) Founder and multiple Grammy Award winner Arturo O'Farrill visited the New York City Mission Society's flagship community center, Minisink, in Harlem to coach students in an innovative music program, Global Rhythms In Our Tribe (GRIOT).
