This weekend, SAK Theatre Company premieres their original rap musical, Robyn da Hood, at the Orlando International Fringe Festival. Best known for their improvisational comedy, SAK's newest show is a scripted musical that posits "Robyn" Hood was a woman surrounded by a rebel band of Merry Maids.

With a script by Lindsay Taylor, Mike Carr, and Chris Dinger, and music by Jordan Keyes, Robyn da Hood builds on the success of 2012's Lil' Women and last year's Jekyll n' Hyde.

"Rap is a powerful storytelling tool," says Taylor. "We've had so much fun exploring these timeless narratives over the years. Every piece provides a new challenge - how do we want to honor the heart of the story while looking at these characters and themes in a new way?"

In Robyn, Man Marion is an office of the law charged with capturing the woman who steals from the rich to give to the poor. When he falls in love, he confesses to Friar Tuck:

I always thought I'd end up with a girl who's ride or die.

But never a woman who led a life of crime,

especially someone who could beat me in violent fight.

Of course I couldn't fall in love when the time is right.

But it's the 12th century we're in the modern ages.

Gender politics surely won't get any more complicated.

SAK's Robyn da Hood will play in the Fringe's Orange Venue, Orlando Shakespeare's Margeson Theatre on Saturday, May 16th at 12:45pm; Sunday, May 17th at 7pm; Monday, May 18th at 7pm; Wednesday, May 20th at 9:45pm; Saturday, May 23rd at 6:15pm; and Sunday, May 24th at 2pm.
