Rose Theatre Presents THE SOUND OF MUSIC, 6/3-19

The Sound of Music will close The Rose's 2010/2011 season and kick off the summer with an experience families won't soon forget. The classic musical about Maria and the von Trapp family will feature "a few of our fav-or-ite things" - familiar songs, vibrant sets and a selection of the finest actors and actresses including Broadway star Kirk Vaughn-Robinson - June 3 to 19. "The Sound of Music is based on a real family and real events, and when the characters break into song and dance, it is because they have so much to express and words simply do not do the emotions justice!" said guest Director Jennifer Holcombe.

The Sound of Music tells the story of lively Maria who ventures from the Austrian convent to
become the governess of widowed Captain Georg von Trapp's seven willful children. Against all
odds, Maria wins the love of the kids and soon falls for the Captain himself. When he is ordered
to report for duty by the Nazis, the whole family flees to safety.

Even more than the storyline, the songs including "The Sound of Music," "Do-Re-Mi," "My
Favorite Things," "Edelweiss" and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" will win the audience over with
charming familiarity.

More than 200 children auditioned for the seven available roles and, although Holcombe and
her colleagues had a difficult time making the selections, she is "deeply thrilled with the von
Trapp children they have chosen!"

In addition, the talented cast comprises of eight contract actors joining The Rose's own
year-long Intern Dani Jo Stephenson, and a chorus of 25 other actors. Captain von Trapp will
be played by seasoned touring professional Kirk Vaughn-Robinson who will not only bring great
poise to the lead role, but also be a powerful resource for the rest of the cast.

"[Vaughn-Robinson] has so much to bring to the production and I am going to seize every
opportunity," said Holcombe. He toured for the past 12 years with Broadway's Phantom of the
Opera, and has an extensive resume including productions at Buck's County Playhouse in
Philadelphia, DM Productions in Cincinnati, the Santa Fe Opera and other renowned theaters.
Audiences can look forward to sets by Scenic Designer Adam Rowe who is Art Director for the
TV series Dexter and has been assistant art director for Mad Men, The Academy Awards and the
Super Bowl.

The Sound of Music was first produced on stage in 1959, based on Maria von Trapp's memoir
entitled The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. The story has been produced around the world
for more than half a century, and was released on the "silver screen," featuring Julie Andrews, in
1965. It was last presented by The Rose in 2002.

The Sound of Music will be presented June 3 to 19 on The Rose main stage with shows at
7 p.m. each Thursday and Friday, and 2 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday. The fast-paced show
will run two and a half hours with intermission and is recommended for ages 6 and up.
