Hudson Guild Theatre Company presents a new production of Eugene O'Neill's' classic American play THE ICEMAN COMETH.

First presented on Broadway in 1946, this incisive portrait of a group of down and out drinking buddies in a skid row bar is in turn both comic and heartbreaking, as it examines the kind of vital lies which are necessary for anyone to survive with hope. The play was based on O'Neill's real life experiences circa 1912 while spending many hours in a dive bar called Jimmy the Priests which was located at Fulton and Church Streets.

Hudson Guild's work as a settlement house seeking to assist those in economic need began in 1896, and continued into the 20th century and the time in which the play is set. The characters in the play fighting addiction and poverty were part of the same community for which the Guild was providing services at the time. Thus, the story of the play connects directly with the history of Hudson Guild and its work of helping to improve the lives of people existing in difficult socioeconomic circumstances.

Hudson Guild Theatre Company has created a fast-paced, streamlined version of the play filled with both humor and pathos. The cast is led by Brian Poteat as the unforgettable travelling salesman called Hickey. Poteat is an accomplished stage and film actor, who has appeared in the films The Devil's Advocate, Michael Clayton and The Bourne Legacy, as well as recent stage productions of Awake and Sing and Waiting for Lefty. He is joined by a company of 14 other actors, several of whom have appeared in previous HGTC productions.

The production is directed by Jim Furlong, who has directed a wide variety of productions at Hudson Guild including Jazz by Shakespeare, Edward Albee's The Death of Bessie Smith, Frankenstein, The Hip-Hop Misanthrope, The Letter, Three Sisters, Alice in Wonderland, Ghosts, Hamlet, Sketches of Blanche by Tennessee Williams, and a remarkable 90-minute adaptation of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung. Sets are designed by You-Shin Chen, a recent graduate of New York University's MFA Design Program. Lights are designed by Megan Peti returning for her 18th production with the Company, with costumes created by Anthony Paul-Cavaretta, making his company debut.
