Frida Kahlo Show FRIDA LIBRE to Play Queens Theatre This Weekend

Frida Libre, the North American premiere of the story of the legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, will be presented at the Queens Theatre, November 16-19, with actress Flora Martínez in the starring role. Each performance will be followed by an audience question and answer session with Ms. Martinez.

In this colorful and meticulously researched study on the life of work of Kahlo, Martínez, the Canadian-Columbian star who moved to Mexico to research the play's subject, presents her unique vision of the magical world of one of the most influential women in Latin American history. The production previously played to sold-out audiences in Columbia and is set to move to Mexico and Paraguay next.

Frida Libre explores Frida Kahlo's art, her success, her sexuality, her passionfor politics and her complex relationship with Mexican artist Diego Rivera, to whom she was married from 1929 to 1939 and again from 1940 until her death in 1954.

"When I learned about the show, I was taken with the way that it was developed," said Taryn Sacramone, executive director of the Queens Theatre. "Flora Martínez - an extraordinary performer - dedicated years to researching the life of Frida Kahlo. The depth of understanding she has about such a fascinating woman and artist enables Flora to bring Frida's story to life in a uniquely powerful way. We are really excited to be the very first ones to bring this incredible performance to the United States."

Frida Kahlo de Rivera (1907-1954) was a Mexican painter known for her self-portraits. Inspired by Mexican popular culture, she employed a naïve folk style to explore questions of identity, post-colonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. Afflicted by polio as a child, she suffered from numerous health problems throughout her life.

Frida Libre will be performed in Spanish at two special performances and in English at three other performances (with live music preceding each show) as follows:

- Thursday, Nov 16, 2017 at 7:30pm (English)
- Friday, Nov 17, 2017 at 8pm (Spanish)
- Saturday, Nov 18, 2017 at 2pm (Spanish)
- Saturday, Nov 18, 2017 at 8pm (English)
- Sunday, Nov 19, 2017 at 3pm (English - with audio description available)

Tickets are $20-$42. In addition, a Frida Kahlo pop-up shot will be open before and after each performance.In addition to this, while supplies last complimentary food and beverage will be provided by Tequila Pasion, Cafe Origen and Escorza restaurant. Running time for the play is 70 minutes.

"Frida used to say, 'death only exists when one was forgotten,'' said Flora Martínez. "As a performer, it is such a gift to witness the profound love with which Frida is loved and remembered, to serve as a memory of the introspections and conclusions a fascinating mind like hers left us as legacy."

Flora Martinez is a film and television actress and singer best known for her title role in the film Rosario Tijeras. Martinez was nominated for Goya Award for Best Spanish Language Foreign Film in 2005. She studied at New York City's Actors Conservatory. Her first feature film, Soplo de Vida, was released In 1999. Directed by Colombian director Luis Ospina, Martinez won the Best Actress Award at the Biarritz Film Festival in France. She has worked in the theater in the staging of Herat by Daniel Berardi and starred in Lolita's Club (2007), which was directed by noted Spanish filmmaker Vicente Aranda. She is also known in the film industry for having worked in movies such as I'm With Lucy (2002), directed by Jon Sherman, and Violet of a Thousand Colors (2005), directed by Harold Trompetero. She recently starred as the lead of La Bruja ("The Witch").

Frida Libre is being produced by Artistry in Motion Group, a theatrical Production Company based in New York City.
