Established in 2007, Van Cougar aims to celebrate and remind the public of the importance of oral storytelling. Company Members Mark Sitko, Erica Rippy, Paul Alexander, Ned Buskirk and Erin Shea collect oral stories to create dynamic, provocative theater that challenges traditional forms of dramatic literature.

Over the past four years, the company has recorded hundreds of hours of interviews, and conducted workshops of the stories with actors on both coasts. In 2009, Van Cougar presented their first full-scale production, Rocky Philly, a 90-minute play that weaves personal stories collected from citizens of Philadelphia with the movements of the characters from the classic Academy Award-winning film, Rocky, at The Bushwick Starr. The company returns to the Starr with the world premiere of Gonna See a Movie Called Gunga Din.

Van Cougar is engaged in a long-term project to compile an internet database of stories for use by artists and anthropologists alike, representing a variety of ages, races, genders, and geographic regions. For more information visit http://www.vancougararchive.org.
