A-List Actresses Take Their Turn With A Dallas Classic DAFFODIL GIRLS

In 2013, Fun House Theatre and Film forever changed the landscape of children's theatre in DFW with an original play that defied convention, expectation and possibility, Bren Rapp and Jeff Swearingen's DAFFODIL GIRLS. The production became the talk of the industry, media outlets locally and nationally and after selling out its original run had to be brought back for a second round, with a cast of young actresses ages 6-15 becoming the envy of the adult set of artists who continued to pack a small black box theatre in Plano to experience what became a phenomenon.

The Event: For one night only, MONDAY, JANUARY 15TH, the adult fan girls of this work finally get their chance to tackle the cut throat world of cookie sales in a staged reading of DAFFODIL GIRLS. Some of the most prolific, acclaimed and awarded actresses in Dallas will take the stage in what is part celebration of the great original work that makes our arts community so unique and part fundraiser to cover the supplemental costs of Fun House Theatre and Film again defying convention, expectation and possibility as it takes another of its original works out of Dallas and Off Broadway, Jeff Swearingen's award winning comedy, STIFF.

About DAFFODIL GIRLS: In 2013, based on a concept by Bren Rapp, award winning playwright Jeff Swearingen transformed the testosterone filled David Mamet ode to the cut throat world of real estate sales, and surviving as a man within it, into a dark comedy centering on a group of pre-teen girls trying to make their way through both childhood and cookie sale season for their troupe of Daffodil Girls. Far from a gimmick or simply a parody, DAFFODIL GIRLS used Mamet's heightened sense of super realism as a starting point not only as a vehicle to prove that young actresses were capable of performing in that style but as a way to weave a story about a unique set of female characters and their experiences struggling to find their place and maneuver what at times can be an equally as harsh landscape to anything Mamet could imagine; childhood. Produced by Rapp and under Swearingen's direction the show was a multiple award winner and truly a first of its kind: at its core the darkest of dark comedies, a meta-theatrical look at a classically American style of theatre inspired by the work of David Mamet, a production cast with children presented at once as a drama for young audience members but also experienced comedically for adult audience members and unlike anything the city had seen. It became the crown jewel of the Theatre Communications Group Conference held in Dallas that summer, catapulted Fun House Theatre and Film from best kept secret status to a benchmark of theatrical training for youth in the area and to national recognition, launched the careers of the young actresses in the play both on local stages and national television and left a legion of fans clamoring to see it again. They now have a chance in this novel approach to a staged reading of the work, directed by Swearingen and featuring a cast of the region's most accomplished actresses.
