TheatreLAB Presents Original Performance Piece EXQUISITE CORPSE This Weekend
TheatreLAB will present Exquisite Corpse, an original devised work directed by Guest Artist Amy Surratt, as part of the TheatreLAB Summer 2013 Session.
Exquisite Corpse is a devised theatre work, created in collaboration with TheatreLAB's Summer Session Acting Company, and led in concept and construction by Amy R. Surratt. The piece began through the Surrealist's parlour game of the same name, and seeks to engage in form without adhering to a sole performance-style. Participants of this communal poetic creation manipulate elements of time, space, and language -- using the body to disrupt the verbal field and create a vision of the dialectical structure of collage as linked to the concept of "identity."
What we are creating together is an experimental performance piece that explores the role of the audience in the construct of "meaning" and character.
"TheatreLAB is an amazing addition to the RVA community for providing these emerging artists an opportunity to create new, risky, collaborative work that they would most likely not be able to experience otherwise. It is my hope that this vibrant, lovely city joins us for Exquisite Corpse, and experiences something as unique as the individuals involved in its creation. I am so very pleased to be in Richmond, and excited to share this process with you," says Surratt.
"Last year, TheatreLAB produced The Antigone Project, a devised adaptation of Sophocles' classic tale and we're thrilled to keep that experimental theatre momentum going with Exquisite Corpse. It's an added thrill to have my dear friend, Amy Surratt, take time out of her crazy New York schedule to come to Richmond and create with us. The sheer amount of skill and passion she brings to the table is truly inspiring and we at TheatreLAB couldn't be happier to have her here working with our company," says TheatreLAB Artistic Director, Deejay Gray.
Exquisite Corpse will be presented at Dogtown Dance Theatre today, July 27th and the 28th at 8pm. Pre-sale tickets are $10 regular price, $5 for seniors and students.
