Photo Flash: Philadanco Performs at Alden Theatre 2/12

By:

The acclaimed Philadelphia Dance Company (Philadanco), will perform at McLean's Alden Theatre as part of its Black History Month Celebration at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12. Tickets are $40, $35 McLean district residents. A free, pre-performance chat with Philadanco founder Joan Myers Brown will be held at 7 p.m. The theatre is located at 1234 Ingleside Avenue.

Founded in 1970 by Myers Brown, Philadanco <http://www.philadanco.org/> is celebrated for its innovation, creativity and preservation of predominantly African-American traditions in dance. Created to provide opportunities for Black dancers, who had been systematically denied entrance to many local dance schools, Philadanco has since grown into a professional dance company that is recognized across the nation and around the world for its artistic integrity, superbly trained dancers and electrifying performances.

Philadanco's eclectic and diverse repertoire ranges from works by pioneering choreographers such as Talley Beatty, Gene Hill Sagan and Louis Johnson to premieres and new materials from contemporary choreographers including Daniel Ezralow, Jawole Zollar and Christopher Huggins. "If you like your dance virtuosic, spiritually uplifting and socially conscious, don't miss Philadanco." -The Philadelphia Inquirer

This performance is partially supported by a grant from Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour, a program developed and funded by The Heinz Endowments; the William Penn Foundation; the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency; and The Pew Charitable Trusts; and administered by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.
