SYNOPSIS
Set in March 1933 on the Twentieth Century Limited, a train from Chicago to NYC, Broadway ballyhoo meets Hollywood hustle. Bankrupt, with his career on a downslide, egomaniacal Broadway director Oscar Jaffe boards the Twentieth Century Limited train and encounters his former discovery and ex-chorus girl Lily Garland, now a temperamental Hollywood star on the train between New York and Chicago. He pulls out all the stops in persuading her to return to Broadway in his upcoming show. He lies, cheats, and even pretends to be dying. Trying to make sense of the chaos are his long-time assistants Webb and O'Malley. Other hilarious characters include George, Lily's lover, and Max (another ex-lover and producer) and a religious fanatic looney who has escaped from an institution. Adapted by Ken Ludwig of Lend Me A Tenor and Moon Over Buffalo
CHARACTERS:
• Oscar Jaffe (male, 40-60) Larger than life, self-absorbed Broadway producer. A combination of Orson Welles and Max Bialystok, whose voice “is a lofty instrument designed to meet the great moments in life
• Lily Garland (female, age 35-45) One-time chorus girl discovered by (but since estranged from) Oscar Jaffe. Now a Hollywood star. She is stunning, histrionic, glamorous, egotistical…and totally magnetic.
• Ida Webb (female, age 35-60) Tough, efficient, smart-mouthed dame who plays poker with the boys…and usually wins
• George Smith (male, age 30-40) Lily Garland’s agent (and current lover). “A collar ad with temperament.” Attractive, but not the brightest porch light on the block.
• Anita Highland (female, age 25-35) Down to earth office manager to Dr. Grover Lockwood
• Dr. Grover Lockwood (male, age 30-45) Nervous disposition.
• Matthew Clark (male, age 40-60) Outwardly meek but a religious fanatic.
• Porter (male, any age).
• Owen O’Malley (male, age 35-60) A cynical and bellicose Irishman, but not without some charm. Irish dialect a plus but not mandatory
• Conductor (male, 40-65) A dignified, no nonsense sort of man.
• Beard, Detective, Max Jacobs (male, age 30-60) These three roles may be played by one actor. German accent a plus
