Breakdown
Synopsis:
A famed illustrator and writer of children’s books, has been enjoying a private and secluded life with his partner of nearly forty years. Prickly and outspoken, he has rarely seen his son since walking out on his family more than forty years ago. Now his estranged son has appeared at his father’s doorstep, asking for a seemingly innocent favor. His response sets in motion a dramatic chain of events that exposes the family’s betrayals and secrets as it struggles to come to terms with its past.
Nathaniel Beckinsdale:
70-year-old partner of Martin Rothberg; was once a painter; a bit worn-down and weary from taking care of Martin—for the last forty years; has a dry sense of humor.
Martin Rothberg:
80-year-old children’s illustrator of some renown. Outspoken, prickly, opinionated, dark sense of humor, in poor health but was clearly a hearty and imposing physical presence in his prime. Began as a painter, but found easier success as a children’s illustrator.
Jacob Rothberg:
Estranged son of Martin (early 40s)—curator of modern art collection in Chicago.
