The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess is the second production of The Aurora Fox Arts Center’s 2016-17 season, running November 25, 2016 through January 1, 2017. Set in the 1930s in an African-American Charleston neighborhood known as Catfish Row, Porgy and Bess centers on the tragic love story of the crippled beggar Porgy and beautiful Bess, who longs to turn away from her former life as a prostitute and drug addict. After a murder, Bess’s abusive partner Crown flees, leaving her at the mercy of a disapproving community and tempted by the seductive drug dealer Sporting Life. Bess strikes up an unlikely relationship with Porgy and gradually finds acceptance on Catfish Row—until a hurricane and the return of Crown change everyone’s lives forever.

Porgy and Bess has evolved from its arguably racist stereotypes of 1930s Broadway. This version is adapted by Suzan-Lori Parks. Summertime, It Ain’t Necessarily So, and Porgy’s celebration of love and life I Got Plenty of Nuttin’ will stir the soul. Characters from the distant past will take you on a walk around a block that might exist today.
