About the Play: Man of La Mancha, written by Dale Wasserman, with music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion, is adapted from Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. The story begins in a bleak dungeon where the imprisoned playwright Miguel de Cervantes is awaiting trial by the dreaded Spanish Inquisition. But first he must face a court of fellow prisoners anxious to relieve him of his few possessions - including a precious unfinished manuscript. In order to save himself, Cervantes stages the saga of Don Quixote, casting himself as the deluded knight errant, and embarks on a magical adventure to defend the noble principles of honor and truth. One of the greatest treasures in musical theatre, Man of La Mancha is a breathtaking tale of epic proportions that will thrill audiences of all ages. With its timely message of courage and idealism in the face of despair, Man of La Mancha, winner of 5 Tony Awards including Best Musical, inspires all of us to keep reaching for the stars with its unforgettable anthem, The Impossible Dream.
