Garden Theatre Announces Auditions for Hairspray
Auditions for Lead Roles & Dancers January 5 – 9, 2014
Auditions for Remaining Roles Held February 3 - 8 at Garden Theatre


The Garden Theatre is pleased to announce auditions for its self-produced spring musical Hairspray, directed and choreographed by Rob Winn Anderson. Auditions will be held primarily at the Garden Theatre (160 West Plant Street in Winter Garden). This large production requires a minimum of six adult females, six adult males, 30 or more female and male teenagers (ages 14 and older). All performers will be asked to sing and dance during the audition.

All auditioners should prepare 32 bars of an up-tempo song befitting the style and period of the show (early 1960s). No a cappella singing. Accompanist will be provided and use of the piano is preferred. CD playback is acceptable. Be prepared to dance in clothing you can move in. No open-toed shoes for the dance audition. Dance shoes or tennis shoes only.

Council/Ensemble Dancers/Singers, ages 14 and older (can alternatively attend January 6) – All ethnicities needed for this diverse production

Monday, January 6, 2014
6 – 10pm
Council/Ensemble Dancers/Singers, ages 14 and older (can alternatively attend January 5) - All ethnicities needed for this diverse production

Tuesday, January 7, 2014
6 – 10pm
Council/Ensemble Dancers/Singer callbacks – dancing, singing, reading – will also be considering teen principals from the previous calls. Some will be asked to attend callbacks in February.

Wednesday, January 8, 2014
6 – 10pm
Motormouth Maybelle, and Edna ONLY - Both males and females are encouraged to audition for the role of Edna. No dancing required at this call. Possibly at a later date.

Thursday, January 9, 2014
6 – 10pm
Tracy, Penny and Amber roles ONLY – Will sing and read only at this call so please attend either of the dancer/singer calls onJanuary 5 or 6.

Teen Principal roles (Tracy, Link, Penny, Amber, Seaweed, Little Inez, The Dynamites). Singing and reading only at this call. Please attend the dance call on February 3 if you did not attend in January.

Wednesday, February 5, 2014
6 - 10pm
All Adult roles (Edna, Motormouth, Wilbur, Corny Collins, Velma, Prudy, Mr. Pinky, Gym Teacher, Spritzer, Matron). Singing and reading only at this call. Will move at callback.

Thursday, February 6, 2014
6 - 10pm
Adult Principal roles callbacks (Edna, Motormouth, Wilbur, Corny Collins, Velma, Prudy). Singing, dancing and movement at this call.

Friday, February 7, 2014 – Location TBD
Teen Principal roles callbacks (Tracy, Link, Amber, Seaweed, Little Inez). Singing and reading only at this call.

Saturday, February, 8, 2014
12 – 6pm
Council/Ensemble Dancer/Singer callbacks (will include Teen Principals). Singing, dancing and reading at this call.


Performances of Hairspray run from April 25 – May 25, 2014 Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 2pm and 8pm, and Sundays at 2pm. For more audition information including what to prepare, visit

SET CONSTRUCTION HELP WANTED
The Garden Theatre is also seeking volunteers to help with set construction for Hairspray. Construction will take place weekday evenings beginning mid- to late-January. Experience in painting, carpentry and set design is preferred, but not required. Please bring with you any carpentry and painting tools you may have. Schedules are flexible. ABOUT HAIRSPRAY
Hairspray will run April 25 - May 25, 2014 with Friday and Saturday evening performances, and matinee performances on Saturday andSunday. It’s 1962, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire – to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her ‘do!
