The New Orleans Ballet Association (NOBA) presents one of America's most prestigious companies, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (HSDC), for one performance only on Saturday, April 7 at 8 p.m. at the Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts. An audience favorite back by popular demand and celebrating 40 years as a driving force of American contemporary dance, the company returns with a special anniversary program of master works from four decades of the company's illustrious history.

One Arm is Moises Kaufman's adaptation of a screenplay by Tennessee Williams, based on his short story of the same title. A navy veteran and boxer who lost his arm in a car accident must resort to hustling on Canal Street to make his living. When a john pushes him too far, though, he finds himself on death row. He escapes into the correspondence of his past clients for spiritual salvation until his number is up. Produced by The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans in conjunction with the TW/NOLF. Directed by Augustin J Correro.

The songs are by turns laugh-out-loud funny and achingly romantic, and the classical tale shines anew, making for a luminous, magical musical.

Spafford is headed to New Orleans for their first-ever appearance during the two-week celebration of Jazz Fest. The Arizona-based jam band will perform two shows-special late-night performances with 2:00 am start times-on Friday, May 4th and Saturday, May 5th at Republic NOLA. Both shows promise to go deep into the night (morning?) with lots of the long-form improvisation the band has come to be known for.

The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans returns to Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center for its annual offering for the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival.  One Arm follows Ollie Olsen, a young veteran who is mangled in a car accident and has to resort to desperate measures to get through his most desperate times. Set against the backdrop of the French Quarter in the 1930s and 40s, this is a darker look at the Crescent City than many of Williams' works.

The Wiz: The Super Soul Musical is a musical with lyrics and music by Charlie Smalls (and others) and book by William F. Brown. It is a retelling of L. Frank Baum's classic 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the context of modern African-American culture. A big-budget movie adaptation (which has gone on to achieve cult status) was released in 1978 starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. A live television production, The Wiz, Live! was broadcast on NBC in 2015 to high ratings and critical acclaim.

This score was something I didn't appreciate as a kid because I was too scared to watch the movie again, and I'm glad she had the sense to make me sing it. It's just gorgeous. Fast forward again to this past weekend when I saw THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME presented live at Jefferson Performing Arts Society (JPAS). Stunning is the word that comes to mind.
