Xian Zhang Conducts Handel's Messiah, 12/17 at NJPAC Image New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Music Director Xian Zhang conducts this iconic, centuries-old oratorio, known as Handel's masterpiece. Messiah has become a Christmas tradition, even though in 1742 it was introduced as a work commemorating Easter. A soaring showpiece for chorus, soloists and orchestra, considered one of the most majestic compositions in Western music, Messiah is a soul-stirring way to celebrate Advent. This special performance also features soprano Erin Wall, mezzo-soprano Nancy Maultsby, tenor Miles Mykkanen, and bass-baritone Michael Sumuel.

In an acclaimed first season as Music Director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Xian Zhang "clearly made her mark," NJ Advance Media writes. WQXR placed her arrival in New Jersey in the top two of 2016's classical stories to watch, and The Star-Ledger calls the conductor "a thrilling leader who has already established a strong rapport with the orchestra." New Jersey Symphony Orchestra was called "a vital, artistically significant musical organization" by The Wall Street Journal, and NJSO embodies that vitality through its statewide presence and critically acclaimed performances, education partnerships and unparalleled access to music and their superb musicians.
