The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey is proud to announce Brick City 07101; an art exhibition which introduces six of Newark's freshest emerging visual artists, and demonstrates the vibrancy of Newark's flourishing art scene as well as a diversity of ethnicities, media and inspiration. The exhibition seeks to illustrate the continuum of the artistic legacy fostered by artists working and living in Newark since the early 1900's. The exhibition will be on display at the Art Center July 31st through August 31st. Come join us at the opening reception, Friday, August 7th, 6-8pm. Event is free and open to the public.

Since the turn of the 20th century, Newark has been home to a vibrant art scene. Its bustling commercial trade and urban landscape served as the inspiration for artists such as Henry Gasser, E. Stanley Turnbull, James Carlin and others. These same artists also taught at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts, influencing the next generation of artists, and further establishing Newark as a center of artistic production through the late 1990's.

Although the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts has now closed its doors, Newark's artistic legacy lives on. Aided by the support of the current network of galleries and art institutions, it is the commitment of those originating artists that has enabled this generation of creative spirits to thrive and develop their unique visions.

Brick City 07101 presents Newark artists working in a variety of media (drawing, installation, sculpture, mixed media and painting) and socio-political frameworks. Varying greatly in subject matter, artists are tapping into the varied energies and influences of the Brick City, a name derived from Newark's industrial roots. Participating artists are Gizem Bacaz, Kevin Darmanie, Sarah Grannet, Ivan Petrovsky, Wahala Temi, Polina Zaitseva.

Since its founding in 1933, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey has evolved into a major regional art center with both a professionally recognized art school and a critically acclaimed exhibition program. The Art Center endeavors to enrich knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of contemporary art and the variety of cultures and ideas it represents.
