Via Katlehong Dance Premieres WOZA At Montclair State Univ 5/7-5/10
Johannesburg's Via Katlehong Dance will conclude Peak Performances @ Montclair 2008/09 season with the American premiere of "Woza," which received rave reviews in Paris in March where it played to sold-out houses at the Théâtre National de Chaillot.
A vibrant celebration of the movement and rhythms of natural forces, wind, and animals, "Woza" is filled with energetic, powerful and aggressive dancing amplified by strong stamping feet, hand clapping and singing. The work combines Pantsula -- the South African township urban dance -- and traditional Gumboots dance, mixed with African contemporary movement. "Woza" is accompanied by vocals and live music played on traditional and nontraditional South African instruments.
