Surflight Theatre Education Department Offers Camps, Children's Theatre And More ImageWhile Surflight Theatre is producing a full season of Musicals on the MainStage like Jesus Christ Superstar, Wedding Singer, Saturday Night Fever and Bright Star, the Education Department under the direction of Surflight Director of Education Paula Sloan will be busy with offerings for the young ones. Surflight Theatre is strongly committed to providing arts education for young people along with its theatre on the stage.

The Surflight camps for teens and children will begin with the camp for teens July 8-21. Teens will be given classes in voice, acting and dance and be working on selections from the musical "13". Three more sessions of camp will be offered in the mornings for ages 6 to 12. Sessions will be held at the theatre July 22-28, July 29-August 4 and August 12-18. Space is still available and interested parents and children can find information on the website or email paula@surflight.org.

The Mini ShowPlace experience and High School Apprentice Program were filled through auditions, essay submissions and applications. Mini Show Place is a week long program where the children are taught the Show Place announcements, dance finales, songs, receive Show Place red and white striped uniforms, and "take over the parlour" as Waitri for 2 days in early July. The High School Apprentice Program is an 8 week intensive educational experience, without fee, for teenage students to have dance, music, voice, and acting as well as full training in technical theatre, run crew and some performance, culminating in an Apprentice Showcase and Broadway show trip in late August. The Apprentices will also have a performing road show, and will offer performances around the area beginning in July.

The beloved Surflight Children's Theatre begins July 27th with Snow White. Children's Theatre Musicals are performed Wednesday through Sundays at 6 pm and are geared to ages 2 to 10. They are $12.00 for everyone as everyone is a child at Children's Theatre! Titles include Snow White, Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan and many more. The Children's Theatre musicals are performed by members of the Surflight resident adult company and some teenage apprentices. Characters come out afterwards for meet and greet, autographs and hugs. Shows are approximately 40 to 45 minutes long and can be followed by a visit to the Show Place performing Ice Cream Parlour next door or an ice cream cone at take out.
