By: Gabrielle Sierra
On Wednesday, December 16 at 5:30pm, Labyrinth Books (122 Nassau Street, Princeton) will present A Conversation between playwright Emily Mann and international bestselling author Irene Dische. College roommates and lifelong best friends, the two writers will talk about the ways in which their long, close friendship has shaped them and their work. This event is free and open to the public.
In the summer of 1974, Emily Mann and her college roommate, Irene Dische, traveled to Poland and England on a grant to compile oral histories of Dische's family. In London they met Irene's aunt, Annulla Allen, who had escaped the Nazis during World War II. Her story of survival became the basis of Mann's first play, Annulla, An Autobiography. Emily Mann is celebrating her 20th anniversary season as Artistic Director and Resident Playwright of McCarter Theatre in Princeton. Her numerous honors for artistic excellence include two Tony nominations, four Obie Awards, Peabody and Christopher Awards and the Dramatists Guild Hull-Warriner Award. In 2002, she received an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Princeton University. Irene Dische is a novelist and journalist who divides her time between Berlin and New York. Her books published in 25 countries have included international bestsellers. Her most recent novel, The Empress of Weehawken, was published in the U.S. in 2007 and has been translated into 15 languages. Emily Mann has been working on a screenplay of Ms. Dische's novel.
