Delaware River Theatre Collective and Fabulous Felines Cat Adoption Center to Host Cat Adoptions During CATS

By:

The Delaware River Theatre Collective (DRTC), the region's newest professional theatre company, joins forces with the Fabulous Felines Cat Adoption Center of Lambertville, NJ during the Collective's upcoming production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats.  The Delaware River Theatre Collective production of Cats is set to run on Friday, August 24 and Saturday, 25 at 8 pm and Sunday, August 26 at 2 pm.

The goal of the partnership between the two nonprofit organizations is to save the lives of friendly cats and ultimately find loving homes for those in need. Heather Edwards of the Fabulous Felines Cat Adoption Center, a part of the Lambertville, NJ's branch of the Animal Alliance of New Jersey reached out to the Delaware River Theatre Collective with the idea of showcasing adoptable cats and kittens in the lobby of the theatre prior to each performance.  DRTC Artistic Director, Richard Amelius loved the idea saying, "This is the perfect opportunity to combine the arts with a worthwhile community organization. We are hoping that while we are providing a spectacular production, we'll also be able to help find homes for these animals in need."

Founded in 2001, the Animal Alliance of New Jersey finds euthanasia to be an unacceptable fate for adoptable animals in shelters, who will lose their life due to pet overpopulation. Animal Alliance places animals removed from the shelters into temporary foster care where they are rehabilitated, spayed/neutered, restored to health, and readied for a speedy adoption.

The Delaware River Theatre Collective is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization dedicated to inspiring and educating through the joy of Living Theatre and to engage a diverse audience by making innovative, high quality and relevant entertainment accessible to all ages. The Collective is in the process of securing a permanent venue with plans to produce a full season of musicals and children's shows in its new home beginning in 2013.

Based on T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," Cats takes place at the annual reunion of the Jellicle cats at the Jellicle Ball. The eldest of this special breed, Old Deuteronomy, seeks to select which of the many cats in the neighborhood will be reborn to begin another life. Winner of seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, Cats features 20 of Andrew Lloyd Webber's timeless melodies, including the hit song "Memory."

Cats is directed and choreographed by Delaware River Theatre Collective Artistic Director, Richard Amelius. Amelius has directed numerous productions in the Philadelphia region receiving three Barrymore Award nominations, including two for "Best Choreography" forSweet Charity and Cabaret and one for "Best Leading Actor in a Musical" for his portrayal of the Emcee in Cabaret.  Amelius has formed the Delaware River Theatre Collective in an effort to bring professional, live theatre back to the Bucks County and Hunterdon County region.
