BWW Reviews: THE STORY OF THE NUTCRACKER, A Holiday Delight at The Growing Stage Through 12/21

By:
The Growing Stage, The Children's Theatre of New Jersey has a holiday treat for the whole family, The Story of the Nutcracker now through December 21st. Anyone who is familiar with the holiday dance classic will delight at this play. It presents the charming tale with a fine narrative and very special touches. And for young audiences, it is the perfect show to introduce them to the magic and pageantry of the story.

The book is written by Stephen L. Fredericks and Perry Arthur Kroeger based on the story by E.T.A. Hoffman that inspired the ballet created by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Fredericks also provides the fine direction for this production complimented by creative choreography by Jillian Petrie. Musical arrangements and orchestration is provided by David A. Spellman.

The Story of The Nutcracker made its Growing Stage debut in 1996 and has been presented seven times in the theatre's history including this year. Considered a holiday tradition, The Story of the Nutcracker follows the familiar plot known to the ballet with the pageantry of a holiday party, the battle, and a magical visit to the The Kingdom of Sweets. But The Growing Stage production offers many more special touches with a journey on The Lemonade Sea and charming, original scenes that reinvent elements in the story including The Flowers Waltz.

The cast of The Story of The Nutcracker includes Danny Campos who plays Captain Stahlbaum in the show's opening scene and later delights the audience as the comical, yet serious Admiral of the Lemonade Sea. Lucas Pinner as Herr Drosselmeir captures the magic and mystery of his role whenever he makes his unexpected appearance. Lori B. Lawrence as Madam Mouserinks leads the antics of a hilarious group of mice that includes the bumbling Mouse King played by Jacob Burlas. Jerielle Morwitz is enchanting as the regal Queen of Ice. And Gaby Medine as Clara, Megan Hurley as Johanna and the Sugar Plum Fairie and Steven Etienne as The Nutcracker display their exceptional talents for both acting and dance. Young performers also round out the cast and provide wonderful dance sequences.

Gather your group and see The Story of The Nutcracker. The show runs approximately 90 minutes with a 15 minute intermission. The production will be at The Growing Stage on Fridays at 7:30 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays at 4:00 pm through December 21st. The theatre is located on Route 183, 7 Ledgewood Avenue in Netcong.
