BWW Preview: MICHEL CAMILO: SOLO PIANO at NJPAC on 4/17

From the Dominican Republic to New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) for the very first time, Grammy-winning pianist and composer Michel Camilo gives a rare solo piano concert of his critically acclaimed songs, including "Caribe," "From Within" and "Why Not!" Camilo's show, Michel Camilo: Solo Piano at NJPAC is part of the TD Bank Jazz Series and will be on the Newark stage on Sunday, April 17th at 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Tickets are $55.

Michel Camilo has enjoyed a three-decade career of touring and recording with trios, big bands and symphonic orchestras in the styles of jazz, Latin jazz, popular and world music. The composer, bandleader, and pianist extraordinaire has emerged as one of the most innovative and exciting musicians of his generation for his brilliantly crafted and critically acclaimed recordings, the latest titled What's Up?

Camilo is known for his appearances in the films Calle 54 and Two Much. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Fernando Trueba, who featured Camilo in Calle 54, says: "Michel Camilo is one of the top all-around musicians. Whether it's jazz, classical, Latin American music or film music, Michel is in his element. Every time I see him play, I feel like I'm witnessing a miracle." Camilowon a Grammy Award in Best Latin Jazz Album for Live at the Blue Note, as well as a Latin Grammy Award in Best Classical Album for Rhapsody In Blue. The offspring of a musical family in the Dominican Republic, he has composed works that have been recorded or performed by Paquito D'Rivera, The Manhattan Transfer and Dizzy Gillespie, among many others.
