And with his one-act play Escurial (****) is going to be a dream of Dirk Roofthooft in fulfillment. Already in his student days he wanted to work with this text. The collaboration yielded Fireworks. ' (Knack Be, Alex Lai) DAS crawls itself in the skin of the Spanish King. The starting point is a play by the Belgian writer Michel de Ghelderode, a contemporary of James Ensor. Just like this painter he excelled in sketching grotesque scenes.
The Escorial is the Palace of the King. The death is there around. The King has his Queen poisoned. De hofnar, her secret lover, Kirsti. The King threatens to be crazy. The nar suggests a reversal of roles for to pass the time. The King is jester, the Fool King. Meanwhile, the hangman sneaks through the halls and the monk pray for the salvation of the Queen. Escorial is a tragic comedy about power and boredom, violence and indifference. And about the love of the jester.
