A landmark dance piece in the history of Quebec choreography, Bagne has touched thousands of spectators on both sides of the Atlantic, and its impressive set design was acclaimed with a prestigious Bessie Award in New York. Twenty-two years after its première, JEFF HALL and PIERRE-PAUL SAVOIE have completely reworked the piece, anchoring their acrobatic dance-theatre in the reality of our times and entrusting the performance to two young dancers. Two beings ravaged by enforced proximity and the cruelty of the world. Two prisoners in a quest for love and liberty. Men in desperate straits temporarily comforted by tenderness. The movement is tense, vigorous; the confluence of bodies fierce. The soundscape created live onstage by Michel F. Côté reinforces the feeling of urgency of the original. This enclosed enclave is pulsing and poignant, a powerful metaphor for our own psychological imprisonment.
