UM School of Theatre & Dance Announces DANCE IN CONCERT, 3/7-10
The UM School of Theatre & Dance celebrates "storytelling, meaning-making, and movement for movement’s sake in a rich evening of choreography presented in its upcoming production of Dance In Concert. Join us for 13 eclectic dance works choreographed or restaged by UM faculty, students, alumni and Icelandic guest artists Brian Gerke and Steinunn Ketilsdóttir.
"The Dance Program will present MEAT collaboratively choreographed by guest choreographers Brian Gerke and Steinunn Ketilsdóttir. Gerke, a Missoula native, returns to his hometown with Icelandic dance partner Ketilsdóttir to make a new contemporary dance piece for UM students. Following a five-week guest artist residency, the culminating experience is the production and performance of MEAT, a dance marked by fierce, supple, virtuosic and nuanced movement.
"Associate Professor of Dance Michele Antonioli presents Crane Wife. A contemporary ballet based on a Japanese folk tale and to the music of the Decemberists, Crane Wife is an emotionally charged dance steeped in imagery of love and greed and the intersection thereof.
"Antonioli’s work is also featured as she restaged four classical solo variations from the infamous ballet Paquita that premiered in Paris in 1846. Performed by four classically trained ballet dancers, the variations serve as the concerts entr’actes, or small dances that transition from one dramatic piece to the next.
"Local musician Steve Kalling (bassist for Discount Quartet and the Wizpops) pairs with senior dance major Clare Antonioli in a contemporary dance work, Figments. Lush, detailed, gorgeous music and dance merge in this delightful duet.
"UM Dance Program alumni will be featured in Bonus Track, a collaboratively choreographed original dance that celebrates the dance program’s roots. Bonus Track will be a special feature for the Friday and Saturday evening concerts.
"Presented in the beautiful Montana Theatre, this breathtaking culmination of two semesters’ work is a performance not to be missed!"
