Once on This Island at Birmingham Village Players

Once On This Island is a delightful musical that tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl in the French Antilles who falls in love with a wealthy boy, Daniel, and makes a deal with the island’s gods to save his life, ultimately proving that love is stronger than death and prejudice. This Tony award winner is known for its joyful storytelling and powerful message. It uses the culture, folklore, music, myth and the storytelling traditions of the Caribbean to tell the tale. Once On This Island runs Sept. 18-Oct. 4 at Birmingham Village Players and is based on Rosa Guy’s novel My Love, My Love: or The Peasant Girl which is loosely based on the Hans Christian Anderson fable “The Little Mermaid.”
