Matrix Theatre Company’s 2012-2013 Season With DEATH AND THE MAIDEN, 9/21-10/14

Death and the Maiden, Ariel Dorfman's political drama, opens the Matrix Theatre Company's 2012-2013 Season. Running from September 21 through October 14, the play depicts a tense political and psychologically complex story which confronts the audience with issues of justice and revenge, especially in relationship to the punishment of war criminals. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 pm, with Sunday performances beginning at 3 pm, and are presented at the Matrix Theatre located at 2730 Bagley in the heart of Detroit's Mexicantown.

Paulina Salas, a former political prisoner, and her husband Gerardo Escobar, an attorney, live in a country at a time when its government is transitioning from dictatorship to democracy. Gerardo is rescued from a flat tire on a country road and safely delivered to his home by Dr. Roberto Miranda, a physician.  When they arrive at Gerardo's home, Roberto finds himself accused of rape and torture by Paulina who insists he is the sadistic doctor who tortured her when she was a political prisoner. She takes him hostage, and puts him on trial forcing him to confess his crimes. Roberto's protest of his innocence leads to an all-night stand-off between the three characters. Complex relationships and thrilling twists and turns bring this story of love, betrayal, revenge, and forgiveness to a surprising conclusion that will have audiences talking long after the show has ended.

"This show is just as relevant today as it was when it was written in 1990," said Megan Buckley, Matrix Theatre's Director of Production. "We're already getting a lot of buzz about it," she said. Death and the Maiden is directed by Kate Peckham and features Karen Kron as Paulina Salas, Pat Loos as Gerardo Escobar and Samer Ajluni as Dr. Roberto Miranda.
