"This Nutcracker production is a momentous occasion for Children's Ballet Theatre, as well as our audiences," said Board Chair Tracie Bolton. "For decades, fans have come from miles away to see our dancers perform. It's a special time for all of us to enjoy the magic, pageantry and holiday excitement of this beloved classic."

The Nutcracker is being produced and directed by Gregory M. George. The classical ballet in two acts, based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, was first performed in St. Petersburg Russia in 1892. It follows the enchanting journey of young Clara, who receives a Nutcracker as a gift at a Christmas Eve party. Her nutcracker is ultimately transformed into a handsome young prince, who leads her through a forest to the Land of Sweets, where she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy. Among the ballet's most famous and memorable moments are a battle between toy soldiers and overgrown mice, a Christmas tree that grows to huge heights, the pas de deux of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier, and a shimmering snow scene. Mr. George has created another original prologue which will include an outdoor Victorian winter street scene.

CBT is a premiere audition based company comprised of over 60 dancers ages 8-18 who reside in Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, Jackson, Shiawassee and many other outlying Counties. The principal role of Sugar Plum Fairy will be played by Haslett junior Olivia Duryea. Her older sister played the role twice during her time with the company. There are three graduating seniors with the company Victoria Hay, Tory Coykendall, and Nicole Burnett. Fritz and Clara will be played by Tara Fedewa and Autumn Knapp. The cast this year will feature four guest dancers from the Children's Miracle Network and several male guest dancers from Grand Valley University, Sault St. Marie, and Alma College.
