Mac Cat Theatre Company Presents TONES ON TALES: A NIGHT OF SAMUEL BECKETT

By:

Mad Cat Theatre Company continues its 16th season with a presentation of Tones on Tales: A Night of Samuel Beckett. The evening will include three pieces by Beckett: Not I, Eh Joe and Footfalls. These particular short plays showcase the workmanship of minimalism. The audience as spectator is led into a voyeuristic experience. Each play features private moments that unlock the consciousness of their characters dealing with loss and regret.

Samuel Beckett was an avant-garde novelist, playwright, director and poet, who is regarded as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. Eh Joe was written in 1965 for German television. Eh Joe centers around a man just past his prime, haunted by opportunities lost in the face of his own mortality. Mad Cat was granted permission by the Beckett estate to film Eh Joe and will be presenting it during each performance. Not I was written in 1972, originally performed at Lincoln Center. It features a mouth in space, seemingly rambling, performing what Beckett describes as an act that should "work on the nerves of the audience, not its intellect.". Footfalls tells the story of a relationship between mother and daughter where the daughter has taken care of her sick mother for the duration of her life. When the play begins, we see what looks like the end of their routine.

Not I and Footfalls will be presented live with featured performances by Deborah L. Sherman and company member Carey Brianna Hart. Eh Joe will be presented as a short film featuring Mad Cat artistic director Paul Tei. Not I and Footfalls will be directed by Paul Tei, Eh Joe was filmed and edited by Ted Chambers. Lighting design by company member Melissa Santiago Keenan, sound design by company member Matt Corey and costumes by company member Leslye Menshouse. The three pieces will be presented at Miami Theater Center's SandBox for four nights only. Mad Cat last took on Beckett when director Paul Tei staged the classic Waiting for Godot just after Hurricane Katrina. Beckett's works continue to prod and challenge his audiences, Mad Cat and director Paul Tei are proud to bring this triad of pieces to life for Miami audiences for a limited engagement.
