FROST SCHOOL OF MUSIC HOSTS "WORDS AND MUSIC BY Jerry Herman

A PREVIEW SCREENING OF NEW PBS DOCUMENTARY & Q&A WITH FILMMAKER Amber Edwards AND SPECIAL GUESTS

Monday, September 17th at 6:00 PM at the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre

The Frost School of Music's Stamps Family Distinguished Visitors Series presents "Words and Music by Jerry Herman" a ninety-minute documentary which tells the story of the life and career of one of the grand masters of American Musical Theater. Jerry Herman, a University of Miami graduate, is the composer/lyricist of some of the most successful and beloved musicals of the 20th century – " "Hello, Dolly!", "Mame", and "La Cage Aux Folles."  The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Amber Edwards and special guests, Broadway musical director Don Pippin and Barry Brown, co-producer of "La Cage Aux Folles" and UM theatre arts faculty member.  During her visit to campus, Edwards will also meet with broadcast and motion picture students at the School of Communications.

This event is free and open to the public and takes place at the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre. Seating is limited and reservations are required. The Jerry Herman Ring Theatre is located at 1312 Miller Drive on the University of Miami 's Coral Gables campus. For more information and to reserve tickets for the movie screening, visit  www.festivalmiami.com  or call (305) 284-4940.

"Word and Music by Jerry Herman," which is slated for national PBS broadcast in 2008, was produced, written and directed by Amber Edwards for NJN Public Television. The film chronicles Jerry Herman's rise from witty off-Broadway revues during the 1950s, to his first Broadway triumphs in the 1960s, through the 1970s to his triumphant smash hit in 1983, La Cage Aux Folles, which also made social and political history. This preview is presented courtesy of NJN Public Television.

The star-studded "supporting cast" includes Carol Channing, Angela Lansbury, Charles Nelson Reilly, Marge Champion, Arthur Laurents, Michael Feinstein, Charles Strouse, Fred Ebb, George Hearn, Phyllis Newman, Musical Director Donald Pippin, Producer Barry Brown, and theater historians Miles Kreuger and Ken Bloom, among others.  Filmmaker Amber Edwards was given unprecedented access to Jerry's personal archive, and has assembled a truly remarkable collection of photographs and archival footage (much of it never seen in public) including Carol Channing doing the original "Hello, Dolly!" title song; Super-8 films of Angela Lansbury in "Mame" and "Dear World"; numbers from "Mack & Mabel"; scenes from "La Cage"; and most astonishingly, film of the college musical Jerry wrote at the University of Miami.

"Words and Music by Jerry Herman" is Amber Edwards' sixth documentary for national PBS broadcast, which include "The Dancing Man--Peg Leg Bates" (1992); "Vladimir Feltsman in Moscow" (1993); "Against the Odds: The Artists of the Harlem Renaissance" (1994); "Quicksand & Banana Peels: A Year in the Life of Two Principals" (1998); and "George Segal: American Still Life" (2001). Edwards' films have been screened at festivals in New York, Chicago, Paris, Montreal, Amsterdam, Dublin, and Italy, and have been broadcast in the United Kingdom, Norway, Italy, Israel, and Japan.  Her numerous awards include 12 regional Emmys, including the 2007 New York Emmy for Magazine Program for NJN Public Television's "State of the Arts" series.  Edwards also produces, writes, and narrates the Jersey Arts on the Radio series, heard on Public Radio stations throughout New Jersey, and has been a regular contributor to public radio's flagship jazz station, WBGO-FM (Newark, New Jersey).

The Stamps Family Distinguished Visitors Series is made possible with the generous support of Roe and Penny Stamps. All master classes, workshops and lectures are free and open to the public.
