Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue : A Brief Summary

Lance Corporal Elliot Ortiz crossed over into Iraq . At 19, he received a Purple Heart. Now, back from active duty, Elliot is annointed a hometown hero. As he comes to terms with his memories of war, he uncovers the military experiences of both his father and grandfather, discovering the delicate link that unites the 3 men across time.

About the Playwright

Quiara Alegría Hudes was born and raised in West Philadelphia and now lives in New York . Her plays—including Yemaya's Belly (Portland Stage Company), Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue (Page 73 Productions), and The Adventures Of Barrio Grrrl! (Miracle Theatre)—have been produced at theaters nationwide and will soon be published by Dramatists Play Service. Her musical In The Heights opens off-Broadway in February, 2007, with a book by Hudes and music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Honors include The Clauder Prize, The Paula Vogel Award in Playwriting, and The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Latino Playwriting Award. She is also a composer and earned a B.A. in Music Composition from Yale, then an M.F.A. in Playwriting from Brown. At age 12 her first play was produced by Philadelphia Young Playwrights Festival and Hudes still returns home to lead workshops for young scribes.
