THE ALLIANCE THEATRE LAB PRESENTS Steven Dietz'S LONELY PLANET

The ALLIANCE THEATRE Lab opens its 2006-07 season with Steven Dietz's powerful drama, Lonely Planet.

Lonely Planet tells the story about two close friends during the rise of the AIDS crisis. Jody, who owns a map store, is an introvert that is oblivious to the outside world. When Jody needs to take an HIV test, his friend, Carl, encourages Jody to step outside the store to assume responsibility for his own life.

Proving his point, Carl brings in chairs that begin to takes up space in Jody's store. These chairs represent the mutual friends that have fallen to the deadly disease. Carl has taken it upon himself to place these chairs in certain parts of the store to make Jody see the importance of this HIV test. Steven Dietz's story brings up tension, denial, frustration and acceptance that not only strengthen Jody and Carl's bond, but also a revelation that brings Lonely Planet to its full circle.

Steven Dietz is one of the most produced playwrights in the United States. He has written over 20 works to date including Private Eyes, More Fun than Bowling, God's Country, Fiction, and Rocket Man. He received the 2002 Kennedy Center Fund for Fiction and the 1994 Pen USA West award for Lonely Planet. A native of Denver, Mr. Dietz started his career as a director in the Minneapolis theater scene.
