Now Showing through November 22 at the Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs is the Harlem musical "Bubbling Brown Sugar."  Rarely produced, the show was challenging for Stage Door director Dan Kelley who explains," Most of the material had been lost.  The only piece of music still in existence was an incomplete piano conductor score."

Stage Door producers Derelle Bunn and David Torres brought in Mark Goodman, a Broadway orchestrator who had worked on such shows as "Zorro" with Anthony Quinn, "Mame" with Juliet Prowse, and "Woman of the Year" with Lauren Bacall to recreate the orchestrations and write out the books for the  musical parts. Meanwhile, director Dan Kelley painstakingly transcribed lyrics from old recordings.

A 1976 Broadway hit, 'Bubbling Brown Sugar' recreates the night life of the 1920's - when they drank 'scotch in teacups' and bathtub gin - and the 1930's, from downtown speak-easies to the Savoy Ballroom and Small's Paradise uptown. Performing styles span Bill Robinson, Cab Calloway and The Cotton Club 'cuties.' One is transported to a time when, we're told, 'it wasn't safe to be black,' while the chic white folks' thing to do was traipse to the 'in spots' in Harlem.

Show times are Wed, Thurs, Sat, and Sun at 2:00, Thurs, Fri, Sat at 8PM, and Sun at 7:00 PM. Ticket prices range from $38 to $42.00.
